The month of May has seen a reduction in the occupancy levels at many of the
nation’s hotels.
While some properties are reporting very robust occupancy numbers, others are
reporting a fall-off in their rates, thus forcing down the overall trend for the
industry.
The latest report from the Antigua and Barbuda Hotels and Tourist Association
(ABHTA) shows occupancy at 58.6 percent. This represents a marked decline from
May of last year which stood at 70.8 percent or for 2019, the baseline year due to
its record-setting achievements, which was at 63.5 percent.
The answer for the decline may be deduced from the figures for airlift, when
compared with the May 2019 figures. This important sub-sector recorded an
overall 9 percent decline in May when compared with the same month, four years
ago.
The overall figure for arrivals was 20,290 compared with 22,191 for 2019. Only
the United States, with a total of 11,088, and the Caribbean 2,405 recorded
increases. There were 995 more visitors from the US and 64 from the Caribbean,
compared with the same month in 2019. All other markets – the UK, Canada, Italy,
and others – recorded decreases.
