Health Ministry Issues Reminder on Use of Plastic
Wednesday 3rd October, 2018-There’s a reminder from the Ministry of Health and Wellness that all plastic and Styrofoam materials used in the sale of food are forbidden.
In a notice, the Ministry said citizens, residents and visitors are reminded that all shopping plastic bags, plastic straws and other plastic utensils (knives, spoons, forks) and Styrofoam food service products are prohibited from being imported, used, sold and distributed in Antigua and Barbuda.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness is appealing for people to adhere to the law and use recyclable bags and eco-friendly products when shopping, packing barrels and carrying out daily activities.
Technicians within the ministry have been visiting businesses around the city and have seized large quantities of plastic shopping bags.
Some business owners expressed they are confused, since they believed they had until the end of 2018 to use the bags.
However, Health and Wellness officials maintain even though the plastic bags are in the business’ possession, they are not to be used.
Government placed a ban on the importation of plastic bags in 2016. Additionally, Styrofoam materials are being phased out.
