GPO Repairs to Last for Three Weeks
Thursday 29th November, 2018-The Ministry of Works says it has responded swiftly to address the concerns of the workers at the General Post Office in downtown St. John’s.
The concerns surround specific Occupational Health and Safety issues which led to work stoppage.
A statement from the ministry details that the initial inspection of the building was led by Minister of Works the Hon. Lennox Weston and a Senior Team from the Ministry of Works.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works Mr. Clarence Pilgrim confirmed that the ministry has put a coordinated two-tier plan in place.
He said since the working day would be shortened, the repairs will be effected in the afternoon.
A temporary home within the city environs is proving to be a challenge according to officials. The Multi-Purpose Centre at Perry Bay and the building that once housed Brysons’ Supermarket were identified as possible temporary locations. However, a decision is yet to be made.
The Ministry of Works is assuring the general public that we will make every effort to have the operations of the General Post Office return to normal at the earliest opportunity. A commitment has also been given to employees that everything will be done to make them comfortable while refurbishment of the GPO is undertaken.
Permanent Secretary, Clarence Pilgrim.
