Government to Acquire Seaweed Harvesters
Thursday 14th June, 2018-Government has announced it will purchase at least two Seaweed Harvesters that will capture the Sargassum seaweed offshore and place it in a barge for dumping on land.
The decision was taken at the weekly cabinet meeting on Wednesday. The Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Tourism will collaborate on acquiring the machines that sell for US$46,000 to $149,000.
Hundreds of tons of the Sargassum seaweed have washed-up on the beaches of Antigua facing the Atlantic Ocean.
The seaweed is seasonal and flows with a current that brings tons of the unwanted ocean vegetation, with trapped fish and crustaceans, dying or dead, to Caribbean shores. Several hotels have had to move guests away from the rotting weed, which is usually highly pungent when on shore.
