The government is still putting together all the documentation required ahead of finalizing the loan agreement for the massive road repair and rehabilitation programme that it will undertake on both islands.
Word of this comes from Prime Minister Gaston Browne as he responded to a question posed to him by Opposition Leader, Jamale Pringle, during the ‘Questions to the Prime Minister’ segment of Thursday’s meeting of parliament.
“Mr. Speaker, the documentation is not completed as yet. We are awaiting the finalization and we are hoping that within the next 14 days the documentation would be completed and then we should commence drawings so that we can accelerate the road programme,” he stated.
The government had previously announced that it will seek to borrow $100 million from a consortium of banks to enable it to undertake the nationwide road rehabilitation programme.
Earlier, the government increased motor vehicle licence fees with the expectation that this would go towards amortizing the loan.
In response to a question regarding whether or not private contractors will be used implement the road programme, PM Browne confirmed that there will be a role for private contractors in carrying out aspects of the road programme.
