Representatives of the government of Antigua & Barbuda and Allen Onyema, the
Chairman of Air Peace Ltd, the biggest airline in Nigeria, have agreed on the
modalities to enter a joint venture relationship, where both parties would invest into
the regional airline LIAT 2020 Ltd.This agreement was reached following a series of
meetings between senior representatives from both parties held in Antigua and
Barbuda and Nigeria
The measures agreed will see the Investor acquiring majority shareholding into LIAT
2020 with both parties injecting a combination of cash and other assets into the airline,
with the aim of seeing the emergence of an airline able to respond to the demand for
inter-island connectivity in the eastern Caribbean. The airline will provide safe and
reliable air transport services to passengers and cargo across the region and beyond.
With a focus on providing enhanced connectivity, the airline will help to connect
communities that have been historically isolated due to lack of transportation options
and is expected to deploy aircraft fleet that will serve currently underserved areas in
the region and beyond, connecting people and boosting economic growth.
Speaking at the signing ceremony in Lagos; Antigua and Barbuda’s Foreign Minister,
the Honorable EP Chet Greene underlined his government’s commitment to seeing the
revitalization of the carrier which plays an important role in the Caribbean region’s
social and economic development, and he welcomed Mr. Onyema’s continued interest
in investing in a tangible manner in LIAT 2020.
In expressing his willingness to invest in LIAT 2020, the Air Peace Chairman, Mr.
Allen Onyema, noted his commitment to developing a viable and sustainable airline,
underpinned by an operational strategy that would enable the emergence of a strong
Carrier, capable of responding to growing customer demand.
“We believe that this airline will provide an essential service to people in the region,
create employment opportunities for Antigua and Barbuda and contribute to the
development of tourism and other economic activities in the region”.
Air Peace is the largest privately owned airline in Africa with a fleet of over thirty-
eight aircraft and over 3000 employees, serving markets in Africa, the middle east,
India, China, and Israel with plans for expansion into Europe. It is a member of IATA
and is IOSA certified and in addition to its regular scheduled services, Allen Onyema
has consistently intervened in evacuating Nigerians free of charge in times of crisis –
from South Africa at the height of xenophobic attacks; China, U.K, Israel, Malaysia
during covid pandemic; Poland, Romania at the early stages of the Ukraine war and
most recently, playing the lead role in the evacuation of Nigerian citizens from the
ongoing conflict in Sudan.
