Fire Officials Warn of Bush Fires in Dry Season
Monday 25th February, 2019-Fire Chief Assistant Commissioner of Police Elvis Weaver is reminding residents that the upcoming dry period predicted for parts of the region will increase the likelihood of bush fires.
The Caribbean Climate Outlook Forum said today that “With weak El Nino conditions forecast to persist, chances of drought and recurrent dry spells in the second half of the dry season are increased and heat waves will start occurring locally into May.
The Fire Chief says such periods are ideal for fires to get out of control and he is advising people to be extremely cautious even when permission is granted.
The Assistant Commissioner of Police explains there isn’t a peak season for bush fires, adding once there are dry conditions a blaze can be easily ignited.
He is reiterating the importance of obtaining a permit and warns there are consequences for those who breach the laws.
