Thursday 13th December, 2018-Fire Chief Elvis Weaver is appealing for home owners to insure their properties to ease the financial burden if they are destroyed by fire.
His appeal comes after a fire in Sutherlands last evening consumed a wooden structure that was occupied by a vagrant.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation. While no injuries were reported, an adjacent house sustained damages to windows and guttering. The house which a female resident occupies is not insured.
Weaver acknowledges insurance can prove costly, but says it will prove beneficial in unfortunate circumstances.
The blaze reportedly began at 8:45 pm on Wednesday and brings to over 500, the number of fires on record for 2018.
The vagrant that occupied the 35x 32 wooden structure has admitted to using a candle, but it is uncertain if that was the reason behind the fire last evening.
St. John’s Fire Department responded to the call, assisted by the All Saints Fire Department.
