The Meteorological Office Met Office has issued an excessive heat warning for
Antigua and Barbuda with temperatures that are forecast to top 100 degrees
Fahrenheit, and which are expected to last for as much as ten consecutive days.
Director of the Met Office, Dale Destin, said the wind speed is expected to drop to
as little as 5 knots, thus creating the conditions for the temperatures to rise.
“The winds are going to be particularly light over the next several days and this
would allow the seas to become quite calm. As that happens, the heat will then
intensify. This means that there is an excessive heat watch in effect from Tuesday
(today) until next Tuesday. During this time, the winds are going to be quite light,
and this will cause conditions conducive for the heat index to exceed 38 degrees
Celsius or 100 degrees Fahrenheit,” he reported.
Destin reported that the small craft warning issued on Sunday, as well as the flash
flood warning, have both been discontinued, effective Monday. He said the air
quality has improved to a status of ‘good,’ as the particles from the Saharan dust
have reduced over the past several days.
Meanwhile, the Met Office says Tropical Storm, Gert, is not expected to be a threat
to Antigua and Barbuda. The latest information overnight, suggests that the storm
is unlikely to survive the hostile conditions that it finds itself.
Strong upper-level winds and a dry middle-level atmosphere have combined to
lessen the chances of the storm’s survival. The forecast is for Gert to dissipate over
the next 12-24 hours.
