EU Donates Millions to Barbuda’s Rebuilding Programme

Monday 30th July, 2018 –Antigua and Barbuda is set to benefit from a 5 million Euros (EC$15 million) donation towards the rebuilding of homes in Barbuda that were severely damaged during the passage of Hurricane Irma last September.

Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Trade Minister, Hon. E.P Chet Greene, has welcomed the European Union’s Ambassador to the Eastern Caribbean, Daniela Tramacere, to Antigua and Barbuda. Both officials participated in a signing ceremony to formalize the EU’s donation.

During the introductory meeting, both the minister and the ambassador discussed several issues of concern for both Antigua and Barbuda and the Caribbean which the EU can advocate on behalf of the region.

These include climate change and its ongoing impact on small island developing states such as those in the Eastern Caribbean. Minister Greene and Ambassador Tramacere also discussed the derisking, the policy being implemented by major financial institutions in the developed world that are refusing to provide corresponding banking relations with banks in the Caribbean.

Earlier, in remarks at the signing ceremony for the pledge of financial assistance to Barbuda homeowners, Ambassador Tramacere said that she is baffled that despite ‘so much evidence’ and scientific proof , there are people who still believe that climate change is a myth.

Minister Greene thanked the ambassador the EU for being a reliable developmental partner for Antigua and Barbuda as evidenced by its offer of assistance to help rebuild the housing stock on the sister island.
