The Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission brought an early end to the Carnival Parade last Saturday over concerns of what it termed ‘an unexpected electrical issue’ that posed a potential safety hazard along the route.
In a media release, the Festivals Commission noted that in the interest of public safety, it made the decision to suspend the remainder of the parade in accordance with its commitment to ensuring the well-being of all patrons, participants, and service providers. This precautionary measure was taken in consultation with the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) and Law Enforcement officials.
The Commission statement said it understood that such a decision would be met with some disappointment, but it reaffirms that safety was and is, its main concern. The Commission extends its sincere gratitude to all masqueraders, bands, vendors, and spectators for their understanding and cooperation.
“We also wish to thank the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda and all security personnel for their swift response and dedicated service in maintaining order and ensuring the safety of the city during today’s events.
“Further assessments will be conducted to ensure that future events remain safe and enjoyable for all,” the statement concluded.
Commission sources reported that a truck may have brought down an overhead electrical wire and that at least one individual received an electric shock, however, there was no electrocution as a result of the incident.
