Drought Conditions Result In Reduced Water Supply

Thursday 21st June, 2018 –Continued drought conditions have resulted in a reduction of water supply to households across the country.

The Minister with responsibility for Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA), Sir Robin Yearwood has reported that ground and surface water at the company’s catchment facilities have once again depleted, leaving officials to turn solely to Reverse Osmosis. It now means that instead of the regular eight million gallons being distributed on a daily basis, APUA can only serve consumers with one million gallon of water per day.

As Cabinet spokesperson Melford Nicholas explains, in addition to the dry conditions, the Reverse Osmosis process is encountering difficulties from the Sargassum Seaweed.

According to Minister Nicholas, another challenge being faced is that at least 25 to 30 percent of water is lost through leaking pipes, which is receiving urgent attention.

Even as government pledges to do all it can in making the commodity available through the difficult conditions, talk of an increase in water rates continues.
