A Dominican Republic national employed as a farm worker here in Antigua and Barbuda lost his life tragically last Saturday when he fell from a roof of a farm building and died shortly after due to severe head injuries.
The victim has been identified as 23-year old Michael Alexander Garcia. The accident happened on a farm in the Blackout Area near Potswork Dam.
In an official statement, the Consulate General of the Dominican Republic in Antigua and Barbuda, under the direction of the Honorable Consul Joaquín Díaz López, says it deeply regrets the tragic passing of a young Dominican national that occurred this Saturday in the Blackout area.
“By instruction of the Honorable Consul, the Director of the Consular Cabinet, Mr. Huascar Félix, will provide direct follow-up on the case in coordination with local authorities, ensuring support and assistance to the victim’s family.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and to the Dominican community in Antigua and Barbuda during this difficult time.”
The statement from the Consulate General of the Dominican Republic in Antigua and Barbuda was issued on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Antigua and Barbuda police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Garcia, a father of a three-year-old.
The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. in along Dam Road. Garcia was said to be on the roof of a building when he fell, suffering severe head injuries.
Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived to find him lying in a pool of blood.
Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians Marina Walker and Mekile Tonkinson are being commended for their efforts to resuscitate him.
Despite their attempts and continued efforts by doctors at Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, Garcia was later pronounced dead.
The tragedy has deeply affected Antigua’s Hispanic community, with many gathering at the hospital Saturday evening to mourn his death.
