Defending champion Five Islands Primary’s successful run in the Ministry of Sports Primary School Cup football championship has ended.
Five Islands Primary, which won the title last year, was ousted in the quarter-finals stage of this year’s competition on Friday.
Pigotts Primary, one of the four teams to advance to the semi-finals, snatched a 3-2 victory against Five Islands Primary in the quarter-finals at the Antigua Recreation Ground (ARG).
Elisa Dela Cruz converted twice, and Five Islands scored an own goal for Pogotts Primary. Teejay Hodge and Lashane Benjamin each scored once for Five Islands Primary.
Pigotts Primary got into the quarter-finals as winners of Zone B, while Five Islands advanced to the knockout stage by finishing as winners of Zone A.
Joining Pigotts Primary in the semi-finals are New Winthorpes, Parham, and St. Peter’s Primary.
New Winthorpes are one of the two best third-place finishers to advance to the quarter-finals; Parham finished as runners-up in Zone B, and St. Peter’s Primary clinched second place in Zone C.
New Winthorpes Primary romped to a 5-2 victory against Greenbay Primary, which finished as one of the two best third-place finishers to advance to the quarter-finals.
Asana Percival struck a hat trick for New Winthorpes Primary, and Raylin Rodriguez scored twice for Greenbay Primary.
Parham prevailed 2-1 on penalty kicks against Zone C winners Freemans Ville Primary after both teams fought to a goalless draw at the end of regulation play.
Jonathan Duberry struck a hat-trick to lead St. Peter’s Primary to a 3-2 victory against former champions Golden Grove Primary, which clinched the runners-up spot in Zone A.
Khamar Lloyd and Aiquan Joseph each scored once for Golden Grove Primary.
The four winners of the quarter-finals will contest the two semi-finals at the ARG on Wednesday.
Parham Primary will take on St. Peter’s Primary, and New Winthorpes Primary will clash with Pigotts Primary.
The final and third-place playoff will also be held at the ARG on Friday, June 20.
