The St. John’s Taxi Association has successfully concluded negotiations with the
Florida Caribbean Cruise Association for an increase in fares charged by its
members this cruise season.
Word of this comes from Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez, who noted that the
increase represents the first rate increase for taxi operators providing service to
cruise passengers, since 2005/6.
Fernandez said the Ministry of Tourism is working with its partners in the industry
to increase the number of cruise ship calls in the summer, to extend the season for
those taxi operators who ply their trade at the cruise port.
Vice President of the association, Andre Friday, confirmed that the increase is for
10 percent on the current fares and noted that the fares had already been
implemented.
This season, there will be an increase in the number of cruise ship calls at the St.
John’s Harbour, with more than 700-thousand passengers expected to arrive on
board vessels, bringing brisk business to the taxi operators.
Friday said the association welcomes the new increase, noting that taxi operators at
the airport and elsewhere have all enjoyed increases and he is now happy that
finally, taxi operators at the cruise port can also enjoy increased fares.
