The Republic Bank Premier League (CPL) made a substantial contribution to the Antigua and Barbuda economy in 2024, generating an impressive US$14 million in total economic impact. This result highlights the immense value the CPL brings to its host nations, especially as this was the tournament’s first visit to the country in a decade.
According to a CPL statement, in August and September, five CPL matches were hosted in Antigua, marking the debut season for the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons. The new franchise quickly won the hearts of the local population, creating a surge in excitement and engagement across the islands.
The impact assessment – conducted by GSIQ, CPL’s official Media and Sponsor Evaluation partner – measured the combined effects of spending by event organisers and attendees, as well as the extensive media exposure. Antigua and Barbuda was prominently featured across global broadcast channels and social media platforms, reinforcing its reputation as a premier travel destination.
Pete Russell, CEO of the Caribbean Premier League, shared his enthusiasm for the tournament’s successful return.
“It was fantastic to be back in Antigua and Barbuda for the first time since 2014, and we are thrilled with the impact we’ve had on the local economy. The passion of the fans and the success of the Falcons made our return truly special. We’re confident this is just the beginning, and we look forward to building on these strong results in the coming years.”
As the CPL continues to expand its reach and influence, the tournament remains a powerful catalyst for economic growth, tourism development, and international visibility across the Caribbean. Antigua and Barbuda stands as a shining example of how sport can drive tangible, lasting benefits for local communities and national economies.
