Consumer Affairs Division Launches Big C Club

Wednesday 5th September, 2018-The Prices and Consumer Affairs Division has announced its Big C Club, which will be launched in two primary schools this month.

The club, which aims to bring consumer awareness to students at an early age, will engage grade five students at the Foundation Mix School and the Golden Grove Primary School.

Over the course of the school year, students will learn that our needs and wants are unlimited but the resources available to satisfy these wants are limited. They will also explore how the community defines, classifies and uses resources; learn about the processes of consumption, production and distribution in meeting needs and wants, and the role of consumers, workers and producers in the economy.

The club will also highlight factors affecting consumer spending and why it is important to be an informed consumer when making spending decisions. Students will consider the impact of impulsive behaviour in themselves and others and learn how to and implement strategies for managing their own impulsive behavior. They will also acquire a basic understanding of personal money management and the role of banking, budgeting and saving.

The take home activity that will be given during each session will foster a genuine partnership between home and school learning. Parents/guardians and their children will be able reinforce the subject area covered with real life consumer related activities at home.

The first classroom session will be on 12 September at the Foundation Mix School. A week later, the Golden Primary School will have its inaugural session.
