Broken Sky Wire Caused Island Wide Blackout

Friday 13th April, 2018 -Antigua Public Utilities Authorities is reporting that a broken sky wire was responsible for island wide power outage in the early hours of this morning.

The APUA Systems Control diagnosed the fault which originated on the 69 KV circuit near the Cassada Gardens Substation after midnight.

A crew of technicians was mobilized and isolated the fault at 2:24 am. The first attempt made to reenergize the grid at 2:52am was unsuccessful.

At 3:03am, a second attempt was made to re-energize the grid and power was fully restored on island by 3:28am.

Following preliminary reports, investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the loosened sky wire and the cause of the failed attempt to re-energize the grid.

A sky wire is a protective wire threaded atop transmission towers used to guard against lightening. Once the causes of these faults have been identified, the Authority is prepared to make the necessary adjustments to mitigate the possibility of future occurrences.
