The body of the man pulled from the waters of Point Wharf on Monday morning
has been identified as Justin Brookes, who goes by the alias ‘Shakimba’, a resident
of The Point.
Members of the Antigua and Barbuda Defense Force Coast Guard retrieved the
body of the 35-year-old man, who was discovered floating close to the dock. The
discovery was made by the owner of the restaurant The Captain’s Table, who was
returning from a fishing expedition shortly before 9:00 am.
Residents who are familiar with the deceased man, say he lived on a boat at the
Point Wharf and was once resident in Barbuda, before returning to the mainland.
Another source recalled that he worked on a vessel that transported goods to
Barbuda.
A friend of Brookes said they had not seen him, in roughly two days.
While an autopsy is expected to determine his cause of death, there is speculation
that he may have had an epileptic seizure and fell off the boat, into the water, or he
may have been intoxicated and suffered an accident.
The body was pronounced dead by a doctor at 10:20 a.m. on Monday.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, the dead body of a 54-year-old man was found
inside his home at Bay Street, Villa. The police arrived at the scene around 9:30
a.m. and found the deceased, lying motionless on his bed.
He was pronounced dead at 10:28 a.m. Foul play is not suspected in both incidents;
however, further investigations are ongoing.
