The President of the Antigua Trades and Labour Union, Bernard DeNully, is emphasising that the union understands the importance of maintaining a safe and healthy workplace.
He told the combined ABLP/AT&LU Labour Day Rally on Monday that the union has been in constant dialogue with Government, voicing its observations of many health hazards and that it has made have made recommendations on the issue.
“Our recommendations include, but not limited to, shorten workdays for workers, work at home arrangements for workers, regular deep cleaning and installing ventilators to improve the air quality,” he revealed.
Already, he noted, the government recently recognized that the various departments of Government are suffering from ‘sick’ buildings that are rented and hence the recent announcement of plans to erect a purpose-built government office complex on lands it owns adjacent to the Police Headquarters.
DeNully credits the agitation from his union to help guide the government to come to the decision to have a new Government Office Complex. “This is a clear example of the Antigua Trades and Labour Union being an advocate for a safe and healthier work environment in the public sector,” he declared.
