Asot Michael Could Face Integrity Commission Investigation

Friday 15th June, 2018-The Chairman of the Integrity Commission says there are grounds for an investigation into Saint Peter Member of Parliament Asot Michael.

Michael resigned from the Cabinet last month amidst reports that he was implicated in a bribery scandal with British Property tycoon Peter Singh Virdee.

In a statement, Integrity Commission Chairman Radford Hill following a meeting with commissioners, it was determined that there are grounds for an investigation under section 12(1) (d) of the Integrity in Public Life Act, 2014 and section 3 (1)(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2014.

However, while there are grounds, it is unclear if an investigation will be launched, since the Integrity Commission’s chairman stated they do not have the staff or resources to mount such an investigation. He pointed out that there is only one employee, a secretary, whose responsibilities are shared with the Information Commissioner’s office.

Hill said it is his intention to inquire into the matter and make a formal request from the government for the necessary resources to enable them to conduct the investigation. He added that if it becomes necessary they will ask the Police Commissioner to make an investigator available to assist in the investigation.

The Integrity Commission chairman acknowledged that their interaction with stakeholders and the public has been limited. But he has promised that will change in the short term as they intend to commence a public outreach programme, aimed at sensitizing and informing the public of the existence of the Integrity Commission, its role and mandate and the goals and objectives it has for the short, medium and long terms.
