Antigua and Mexico Discuss Deepening Relations

Tuesday 1st May, 2018 –Prime Minister Gaston Browne talks about a further deepening of relations between his country and Mexico following a courtesy call by His Excellency Oscar Esparza-Vargas, Ambassador of the United Mexican States.

Ambassador Esparza-Vargas is based in Saint Lucia, and is accredited to the Member States of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

Prime Minister Browne welcomed the Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda, and expressed his willingness to further cultivate the long-standing diplomatic relations between Antigua and Barbuda and Mexico, which were first established in 1984. He indicated that both countries should seek to increase bilateral trade and investments.

The Mexican Ambassador congratulated Prime Minister Browne on his reappointment as Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, and affirmed that Antigua and Barbuda can count on Mexico as a reliable partner.

In return, Prime Minister Browne expressed his appreciation to the Mexican Ambassador for the US $5 million promised by the Mexican Government for a social housing project in Antigua and Barbuda. The Prime Minister thanked the Mexican Ambassador for the Mexican Government’s willingness to assist reconstruction efforts in Barbuda, and expressed his hope that this interest could crystallize into concrete initiatives in the near-future.

During his visit to Antigua and Barbuda, Ambassador Esparza-Vargas presented his Letters of Credence to His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, officially accrediting him as the Ambassador of the United Mexican States to Antigua and Barbuda. In addition, the Mexican Ambassador paid courtesy calls on the Honourable E.P. Chet Greene, Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Immigration, and on Ambassador Anthony Liverpool, the acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Immigration.
