The Antigua and Barbuda government is showing a willingness to work closely
with the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers (ABUT) to resolve lingering
issues, related to the reclassification of teachers.
On Wednesday, the Cabinet invited representatives from the union, the Director of
Education, and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, to its
meeting where discussions centered on the issue.
Both sides could not agree on the number of teachers who remain outside of the
scope of reclassification. However, Cabinet sources say the meeting was held in an
effort to reduce the possibility of any industrial action in the new term. The Union
is of the view that in the process of the reclassification, a number greater than three
teachers remains unclassified,” the sources revealed.
The number produced by the ABUT was refuted by the Minister of Education,
however there was agreement that the number receiving increases as a result of the
reclassification may be much higher, since the treasury has been making payments
on the basis of its abilities.
It was stated that the promised issue of greater security to be achieved by planting
more cameras in six identified schools had not yet been achieved, but a source later
reported that “by the end of the Cabinet meeting members learned that all the
cameras needed, arrived at the airport this afternoon (Wednesday) and installation
will continue around the clock, in order to achieve the desired goal.”
In a related matter, regarding school security, after very intense discussions it was
agreed that the Union, two Ministers, a survey team from Lands and Surveys and
other officials will meet on Tuesday at the Sir Novelle Richards Academy, to
determine the boundaries of the school and to begin erecting a fence, shortly
thereafter.
