Antigua and Barbuda joined 191 countries around the world in celebrating the 11th International Day of Yoga last Saturday. The event was organized by the Honorary Consul of India, Vijay Tewani, on behalf of the High Commission of India based in Guyana and accredited to Antigua and Barbuda.
Several senior government representatives took part in the festivities, including Minister of Foreign Affairs, E.P Chet Greene, Tourism Minister, Charles Fernandez, Education Minister, Daryll Matthew and Permanent Secretary attached to Government House, Paula Fredrick-Hunte.
Participants also included members of the diplomatic corps, invited guests, yoga enthusiasts as well as cadets from the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force.
According to Tewani, it was a privilege and proud moment to host this global event in Antigua and Barbuda. The theme for this year, “One Earth, One Health,” was highlighted with a special message from the Heart & Stroke Foundation, encouraging a happy and healthy life balance.
Marking the 10th anniversary of Yoga Day celebrations in Antigua and Barbuda, plaques and certificates were presented to sponsors and yoga instructors as tokens of appreciation for their continued commitment to promoting this holistic practice. The government ministers expressed their full support and pledged to continue helping this event grow even bigger in the years to come.
Meanwhile, The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority was recognised for its support of yoga in Antigua and Barbuda, during the International Yoga Day celebrations held at the Coolidge Cricket Ground on June 21.
The award was presented to the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority in recognition of its ‘valuable contribution to the promotion and popularisation of yoga’.
Donyelle Bird-Browne, Wellness Pillar Lead at the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, remarked, “We are really proud to support International Yoga Day. It’s a celebration that reflects the heart of what we offer as an internationally recognized wellness destination – connection, balance, and inspiration. Yoga brings people together in the spirit of wellbeing, and we’re grateful to be part of a movement that speaks to the future of meaningful travel to Antigua and Barbuda.”
