Antigua and Barbuda has been included in the latest tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump on Wednesday.
Point Express newspaper sought clarification on the matter from the country’s Ambassador to the United States, Sir Ronald Sanders. He said Antigua and Barbuda and all of the Eastern Caribbean countries are to pay 10 percent tariff on goods that are exported to the United States.
“I suspect it relates to the Common External Tariff (CET) that we all apply. However, Antigua and Barbuda exports very little into the US market. Therefore, the 10% tariffs on our exports to the US will have a negligible effect on our economy and none on our revenues. It simply means that such goods as we export will be more-costly to the US consumer who will pay the tariff charge.
“We have always had a trade deficit with the US because we import almost 80 percent of all our imports from the US, and we export very little,” Sir Ron explained.
