Amnesty Period Begins for Immigrants With Gaps

Thursday 1st February, 2018 – The Immigration Department has begun accepting application from immigrants to close gaps in their residency statuses that may prevent them from qualifying for citizenship.

The amnesty period began last week, and will end on 18th May, 2018.

A window at the Immigration Department has been established that will provide confirmation of the upgraded status. Applicants will be charged a processing fee.

Cabinet ratified a decision for amnesty to be granted to persons who have spent seven years residing lawfully in the country, but may have gaps in their residency.

Once it is determined that gaps exist, immigrants are normally ineligible for citizenship. But recent complaints by immigrants who became disqualified prompted the government to take steps towards changing the regulation.
