Wednesday 19th September, 2018-Acknowledging that many issues being faced by the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court are as a result of the lack of funding, Attorney General, the Hon. Steadroy Benjamin is advocating for the establishment of a Trust Fund that will finance the operations of the court.

During his presentation at the special sitting on the occasion of the Opening of the Law Year 2018-2019 on Tuesday, the attorney general said with the trust fund, which will be similar to the one being used by the CCJ, there would be no need for subventions from the various governments, who often times find it difficult to make their contributions based upon the many demands to fulfill their local obligations in their respective countries.

He indicated that he will urge Prime Minister Gaston Browne to engage his colleagues Heads of Governments to examine and investigate the establishment of such a trust fund at the earliest possible time.

On Tuesday, Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, Dame Janice Pereira lamented the deficiencies that exist within the courts in the sub-region, namely unsuitable facilities in which court rooms are housed and inadequate staff to prepare court transcripts. She appealed to governments to address the many issues that exist within the judicial system, in the interest of those who risk being denied access to justice.
