A project that will generate electricity by harnessing the energy from wind turbines
has been launched in Antigua and is making steady progress.
Technical Officer of the SPAARE project, Pierre Briemel, said the project involves
erecting fifteen wind turbines that will generate collectively 4 megawatts of power.
Already, two of the turbines are nearing the completion stage of erection at the Sir
Vivian Richards Stadium, where they are expected to be able to generate enough
electricity to power the stadium.
The other thirteen wind turbines will be erected near Parham.
Briemel explained that the design of the wind turbines has been done in a manner
that allows for the assembling and servicing to be done on the ground and would
only need a hoist to mount it onto the concrete base.
Additionally, the proximity of the plant near Parham will allow for the electricity
from the turbines to help power the nearby reverse osmosis water purification
plant.
The project is being financed by the United Nations Environmental Programme,
the Global Environment Fund, and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development.
The programme is being coordinated through the Environment Division.
