A new block of classrooms has been opened at the Golden Grove Primary School
to ease over-crowding at the institution.
Funded by the Board of Education, the extension of the school plant includes three
new classrooms and a staff room for teachers. It represents Phase One of an
ongoing expansion programme planned for the school.
Senior government officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister, the Honorable E.P
Chet Greene, who represented Honourable Gaston Browne, Prime Minister at the
ceremony, as well as Education Minister, Honourable Daryll Matthew, were on
hand to participate in the opening exercises.
Matthew said it was unrealistic to expect students to perform at their optimum
level in conditions that are not conducive to learning. “I made a commitment to the
staff that as long as I am here and as long as I have life and breathe I would do
everything I can to change the dynamics at the Golden Grove School. The
construction of this new wing is just the first step,” Matthew, the parliamentary
representative for the area declared.
In his remarks, Minister Greene announced a challenge for those students at the
school who will be writing the Grade Six assessments at the end of the school year,
2024. He said those students who pass in the top 100 will receive a laptop to start
of their academic journey at the secondary level.
The top student emerging from this year’s Grade Six assessment was Ms, Carhira
Gerald who placed 7 th overall and who is now attending the Antigua Girls High
School. Gerald joined representatives of the school and the government officials in
cutting the ribbon to formally open the new wing.
