Prime Minister Gaston Browne described the new Upland Development at St. John’s Harbour as ‘astonishing’ during a guided tour on Tuesday, organized by Antigua Cruise Port, part of Global Holdings Limited. PM Browne expressed satisfaction with the rapid pace of development. He reminisced about a conversation 12 years ago with Minister Fernandez on a cruise ship, noting the area was once a marine landfill filled with debris. Now, it’s considered a top Upland Development globally.
The Prime Minister congratulated GPH for transforming the ‘wasteland’ into a premier tourism facility, enhancing Antigua and Barbuda’s offerings. He thanked Mehmet, chairman of GPH, for collaborating with his administration to create one of the Caribbean’s best cruise ports. Antigua and Barbuda was recently nominated as the ‘Best Cruise Port,’ a significant upgrade from its previous status.
Beyond attracting over a million cruise passengers, the development promises opportunities for local entrepreneurs. With 27 stores available, many Antiguans and Barbudans, alongside international brands, will operate businesses. PM Browne highlighted the increase in trade and commerce, offering business ownership and employment opportunities. He emphasized that merchants, taxi operators, and vendors will benefit from the transformation in lower St. John’s.
