More than $7 million have been raised to carry out the ongoing restoration work that is that is taking place at Government House.
Reporting on the progress of the work in her maiden presentation in the Senate on Wednesday, Independent Senator, Jamilla Kirwan, revealed that the project is steadily progressing toward its goal of completion, with a grand unveiling expected no later than the second quarter of 2026.
Senator Kirwan explained that the Antigua Government House Restoration Project, is an ambitious national undertaking spearheaded by the Heritage Trust Antigua Barbuda (HTAB). Since its inception in November 2017, this project has raised over 7 million ECD, largely through the generous support of individuals, non-profits, and corporate partners.
“The restoration aims to transform Government House into a living museum, art gallery, and event space, all while preserving its deep historical significance. The building will continue to serve as the official office of the Governor General, while also becoming a major cultural attraction for residents and tourists alike,” she explained.
Notably, she told the Senate, the site will feature:
- A museum highlighting the history of past and present Governors General, as well as the timeline of Antigua and Barbuda’s development.
- An art gallery showcasing repurposed paintings and royal portraits – in a climate controlled environment to ensure preservation.
- Interactive exhibits that will allow visitors to experience life within Government House.
- A gift shop and event spaces for public engagement.
Sen Kirwan added that one of the most compelling aspects of this project is its focus on heritage preservation. Additionally, the project will offer unique community engagement opportunities, particularly for underserved youth, individuals with disabilities, and professionals in heritage conservation.
According to the new independent senator, the project’s funding is a collaborative effort, with significant contributions from key stakeholders such as the Calvin Ayre Foundation, World Monuments Fund, the Harrison Foundation, Lindbury Trust, and many others.
