Scores of senior citizens were fed, entertained and were the focus of attention at the annual Senior Citizens Day festivities on Thursday, organized by the Social Protection Board.
Held at the People’s Place, the annual celebration of the seniors whose contributions to nation building paved the way for much of the benefits that the current generations enjoy, marked a recognition that these senior citizens have not been forgotten but still remain uppermost in the minds of many in the society,
“What we do is to take a day out of the year to appreciate our senior citizens. They have done so much in their time so today, we brought them here as an outing so that they could feel the love from other members of the community. They were provided with a sumptuous lunch and the programme included entertainment for their enjoyment,” Coordinator of the Social Protection Board, Mary Baltimore stated.
Each of the seniors received a gift so that no one left empty-handed. “The atmosphere we created was quite helpful as it provided an opportunity for many of them to socialize with each other rather than to be at home, lonely with no one to interact with,” Baltimore indicated.
Among the seniors was Ruth Benjamin of Ottos New Town, who at age 98, was the oldest senior attending the Senior Citizens Day festivities.
