The Office of the Governor-General expresses its deep shock and disappointment at the irresponsible actions of individuals who defaced the historic perimeter wall of Government House during the recent Carnival parades. This act of vandalism disrespected not only the nation’s premier heritage site, but also the people of Antigua and Barbuda who value its cultural and historical significance.
In the face of this regrettable incident, the response of our community has been both heartening and exemplary. We extend sincere thanks to the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force for their swift assistance, and to the many donors and volunteers who generously provided paint, supplies, and time to restore the wall to its dignified appearance.
Governor-General, Sir Rodney Williams, felt so strongly about the matter that he made a significant personal donation to procure paint and tools, ensuring that the work could be completed without delay. This personal gesture underscores his deep commitment to safeguarding the dignity of Government House and to preserving Antigua and Barbuda’s national heritage.
Government House, which continues to undergo restoration as part of a major heritage project, stands as a testament to the resilience and unity of the Antiguan and Barbudan people. The quick and generous response to this unfortunate episode is further proof of our shared commitment to protecting our history for generations to come.
We appeal to all citizens and visitors to respect and protect our historic landmarks. Anyone caught defacing the wall will face the charges resulting from their actions. Acts of vandalism diminish our collective identity, while acts of care and service strengthen it.
