Calypsonians and calypso enthusiasts can look forward to the return of the Independence Calypso Competition as the Ministries of Creative Industries seeks to build upon the momentum coming out of this year’s Carnival.
Making the announcement, Creative Industry Minister Daryll Matthew stating that the calypso art-form appears to be on a rebound with the performances and the support from the public witnessed during the just concluded Carnival festivities.
“I wish the public to know that this year, 2025, we will be staging once again our Independence Calypso competition and so all of those artists who have aspirations of being a calypso monarch, you will have another opportunity to do so with this competition,” the minister announced.
Minister Matthew named the sub-committee led by Peter Abraham and Yvonne ‘YB’ Benjamin that planned and executed the Calypso Monarch competition during the Carnival as the persons who will be called upon to manage and execute the upcoming competition.
According to the minister there will be ‘substantial prizes’ for the winners of the competition and he is therefore urging all interested calypsonians to begin preparations as soon as possible.
