Burials at the new public cemetery – Tranquility Park Cemetery – on the Sir Sydney Walling Highway can now commence following the official dedication ceremony held at the facility on Thursday.
Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph, one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the facility, said he expects developments to continue over time on the twenty-acres of land that now comprise the cemetery.
Sir Molwyn foresees the cemetery’s development to include a park where families can visit to reflect and to share memories of their loved ones buried within the facility.
The Tranquility Park Cemetery aims to create a suitable and dignified burial site, to replace the St. John’s Public Cemetery which has been in existence since the late 1800’s.
The Cemetery will provide an accessible, well-maintained burial ground underscoring Government’s commitment to ensuring every citizen and resident of Antigua and Barbuda receives a dignified burial. This is a pivotal step in ongoing efforts to enhance end of life services in the country.
The Tranquility Park Cemetery is situated on 20 acres of land and is to be completed in phases. Minister for Health, Sir Molwyn Joseph, described the new burial grounds as a spiritual haven and a place of quietness and peace that aims to be aesthetically pleasing.
