As part of the ongoing Centenarian Week 2025 celebrations, the Community Development and Citizens’ Engagement Division under the Ministry of Social and Urban Transformation observed Volunteerism Day today, Thursday, June 12, under the theme “Honouring Our Elders, Preserving Our Heritage.”

This day is focused on giving back to the nation’s elderly through acts of kindness, labour, and genuine community service, demonstrating the lasting value of unity, care, and generational respect.

Partnering with the Youth Volunteer Corps

In a beautiful display of intergenerational solidarity, the Division partnered with the Youth Volunteer Corps to carry out a special community project in service of one of the nation’s oldest and most beloved residents. The initiative not only encouraged civic responsibility among young people but also allowed them to witness the importance of honouring and preserving the legacy of our centenarians.

Serving the Nation’s Oldest Living Citizen

The highlight of Volunteerism Day was a heartfelt visit to assist Mrs. Hermena Goodwin, 104 years old, of Jonas Road, All Saints — the oldest living person in Antigua and Barbuda. With energy, compassion, and commitment, volunteers worked alongside the Department’s staff to groom her yard, clean her surroundings, and perform general outdoor maintenance. The atmosphere was filled with joy, gratitude, and respect as young people and community representatives poured love into the life and home of a woman who has lived through over a century of national and global history.

A Living Example of Service, Respect and Gratitude

Today’s outreach was a tangible reminder that true legacy is not just measured in years lived but in the relationships we build and the care we show for one another. The effort brought joy to Mrs. Goodwin and served as a powerful lesson to all involved about the importance of serving others, especially those whose shoulders we now stand upon.

Final Celebration Tomorrow: Bake Sale Fundraiser!

The public is warmly invited to support the final event of Centenarian Week 2025 — the Centenarian Week Bake Sale Fundraiser, taking place tomorrow, Friday, June 13. All proceeds from the event will go toward continuing initiatives that honour and support Antigua and Barbuda’s centenarian community.
