One of Antigua and Barbuda’s oldest educational institutions – the TN Kirnon
School – is currently observing the 110 th anniversary of the founding of the school.
Several activities have already been held as part of the year-long celebrations,
however, one of the main event takes place today with a march against the problem
of youth-on-youth violence that is a growing concern in the society.
“We are staging what we dubbed a ‘peace march’ through St. John’s to highlight
the problem that the society now faces with the several reported cases of fighting
among school children and where in many cases a wide variety of weaponry is
utilized,” said Deputy Principal, Elicia Blucher-Watson.
During the march, all the students are expected to be wearing white clothing.
Additionally, the TN Kirnon is expected to be joined in the march by students from
several of the schools in the St. John’s area. The students will be carrying placards
depicting messages to discourage violence among their peers.
These include the Antigua Grammar School, The Antigua Girls High School,
Christ the King High School, the St Joseph’s Academy and the St. John’s Catholic
School.
One week later, Friday March 8, the school will stage another march, this one to
highlight the issue of literacy.
On Thursday, the students took part in a grand 110 birthday fair on the school
grounds. On March 14 and 15 will be the TN Kirnon Classic Sports Day where
both current and past students are expected to participate.
The TN Kirnon School has a staff complement of 40 teachers and a student body
of 275. The principal is Denmore Roberts.
