The Ministry of Education is forging closer ties and strategic alliances between the
several tertiary institutions operating in the country, including the University of the
West Indies Five Islands Campus.
The ministry is putting in place an arrangement between the university and the
Antigua State College to offer a course of study in pharmacology. This is in
addition to another arrangement between the UWI FIC and the Antigua and
Barbuda International Institute of Technology (ABIIT) where they will jointly
offer a course in Artificial Intelligence. Students will begin their studies at ABIIT
and then ‘seamlessly’ to the university where they will conclude their studies
ending with a BSc degree.
“We will see greater collaboration between these tertiary level institutions this year
and continuing into next year as we build on our various strengths to improve the
quality and breadth of education that is being offered throughout Antigua and
Barbuda,” remarked Director of Education Clare Browne.
The Ministry is also exploring opportunities for collaboration between the UWI
FIC and the newly opened Harrison Centre School of Continuing Education, which
opened late last year, but which begins operations this month.
More than $12 million were invested in the institution to offer a number of study
programmes in a number of critical skills. Already, the Harrison Centre will be
offering studies in marine education, given the fact that Antigua and Barbuda’s
territorial waters extend for hundreds of miles.
Already, the Centre is partnering with schools in the Netherlands and London in
the UK as it explores opportunities to expand its course offerings.
Of note, is the Centre’s collaboration with the Department of the Environment to
offer course dealing with Electric Vehicles and other areas of study concerned with
issues of climate change.
Three of the courses of study where the ministry is focusing some attention are
construction management, mathematics and architectural studies.
