Members of the community are voicing serious concerns over the release of what
is believed to be raw sewage water from an apartment complex on the Epicurean
Drive that finds its way unto the Lauchland Benjamin Drive and settled on that
popular by-road.
Speaking on Saturday’s Browne and Browne Show, PM Browne also expressed
frustration with the public health officials’ tardiness in not ordering the closure of
the facility until the problem has been corrected.
“My understanding is that this is raw sewage that this business man has allowed to
flow unto the government road and this has been brought to the attention of both
the Central Board of Health and the Development Control Authority and as far as
the Cabinet is concerned those agencies need to read the riot act to that person. It
has been months now that they have been warning him and the situation has only
worsened. He has made several promises and he has not done anything, so
therefore we have asked these agencies to ‘up the ante’,” the prime minister
disclosed.
According to the prime minister the situation poses a serious health risk to
individuals and families who drive along the LBD and have the sewage water
splash unto their vehicles and getting unto their clothes or bodies when they arrive
home.
“This is a person who owns a lot of real estate in Woods and it is totally
unacceptable where he is putting profits over the health of the people of Antigua
and Barbuda. It seems as though these public officials are afraid to read the riot act
to these people. That is why I have to be on the front line to call them out because
our people are sometimes too timid to act,” PM Browne exclaimed.
He stated that the problem has been ongoing for months with no effective action
from the CBH and others. He called out the department head to issue a letter
locking down the apartments until the problem is rectified.
