Antigua and Barbuda residents should get ready to take advantage of the many
business opportunities that will become available from the country’s hosting of the
4th International Conference on Small Islands Developing States, which will take
place at the end of May next year.
The subject was among issues discussed on Wednesday when the cabinet convened
its weekly meeting. “The United Nations (UN) 4 th International Conference on
Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) is slated to be held in Antigua and
Barbuda during the period 27 th to 30 th May 2024 and will bring about 2,500
attendees to our shores,” according to the Cabinet Notes for this week.
The Notes added that the conference is expected to provide a boost to the economy
and will offer many opportunities for service providers to be engaged. “The
Cabinet therefore encourages service providers of all types, including owners of
properties for short term rental, caterers, transportation providers, concierge
services among others, to be in a state of readiness to provide services to
attendees.”
To demonstrate the seriousness of the undertaking and the opportunities that will
become available, the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has also named a high-level
committee to explore these opportunities and to help point residents in the
direction they may benefit.
Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, will head the committee, with Tourism Minister,
Charles Fernandez and UN Permanent Representative, Dr. Aubrey Webson serving
as members.
“In the coming weeks, the government will engage in consultations with the
various service providers with the aim encouraging participation,” the Notes
revealed.
