The Ministry of Agriculture has rescheduled the rained-out Day Two of the annual
Piango Fest to take place on Sunday, August 27 on the grounds of the TN Kirnon
School.
A spokesman for the organizing committee said several events were planned for
last Sunday that did not take place because of the rain that brought the day’s events
to a premature end.
According to the spokesman, the agro-processing competition, one of the
highlights of the festival was already judged, but the announcement of the winners
has not yet been made.
“We still have the mango and pineapple eating competitions to take place, and the
performers who were scheduled to perform will take to the stage next Sunday.
Additionally, the rescheduling of the event will give the vendors another
opportunity to do brisk business,” the spokesman added.
The decision to stage the event at TN Kirnon School provides an additional
advantage, as it makes access to the festival much easier, as it is within walking
distance to several suburban communities surrounding St. John’s.
Each year, the Ministry of Agriculture stages the Piango festival to promote
interest in the value of consuming local products. It also uses the opportunity to
promote agro-processing where local fruits are turned into products such as jams,
wine, jellies, sauces, confectioneries, smoothies, and cakes.
The reports indicate that whilst the turnout on Saturday, Day 1 of the festival was
said to be good, it is widely known that Sundays draw a much bigger crowd. The
organizers are anticipating a good turnout, this Sunday.
