The newest member of the Upper House of parliament, the Senate, Senator
Dwayne George, says his recent moves are being motivated by his desire to ‘serve
the people’ of the St Mary’s South constituency.
Speaking moments after his swearing-in exercises at Government House on
Thursday, Sen. George said he is committed to serving the people, and he desires
to serve them in the best way possible. “It’s a lovely feeling; I’m here for the
people; the people are the ones who put me here as they have been asking for me. I
want to give thanks to God, thanks to my family, and thanks to ABLP Political
Leader and Prime Minister Gaston Browne. I also want to give thanks to my
people in Bolans, Crabbe Hill, Johnson’s Point, and Urlings,” he declared.
Sen. George said ‘bringing back’ jobs to the people in the constituency is among
his top priorities. He noted that there are several hotels in the area, yet
unemployment remains high. This, he said, is one of the first things he wishes to
tackle should he emerge victorious at the upcoming by-election. His other
priorities include agriculture, upgrade of sporting facilities, and economic
development for the people of the area.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Browne said the selection of Sen. George as the
candidate for the by-election has improved the party’s chances of winning the by-
election.

He drew comparisons with how Senator George is approaching his expected
nomination with that of the UPP candidate for the January 18 elections, who failed
to resign from his government post, before Nomination day. According to the
Prime Minister, Sen. George who has served as a lecturer at the Antigua State
College for many years, has already submitted his resignation.
The Prime Minister also scuffed at the suggestion that Sen. George has been
‘bought out’ by the ABLP. He said the party had been searching for a candidate to
replace Sen. Samantha Marshall, and several persons in the area recommended the
new senator. PM Browne noted that the response that the new caretaker has
received in the constituency has been quite positive.
