Shane Grant has pleaded guilty to two counts of larceny and was remanded to His
Majesty’s Prison on Thursday.
He will re-appear before Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh, on 5 th September 2023,
when the matter will continue.
Grant, a 23-year-old resident of Liberta is accused of stealing several valuable
items and monies from two women in two separate incidents in St. John on
Tuesday, 11 th July 2023.
In the first incident, Sheryl Masine of Newgate Street reported to police that at
around 5:20 a.m., she was robbed of her handbag that contained several items,
including $120 in cash, a mobile phone, and other personal items.
Masine was reportedly walking on Long Street, in the vicinity of the Salvation
Army, when she was approached by a man armed with a knife, who ordered her to
hand over her bag. The woman reportedly resisted Grant’s demand and a struggle
ensued, during which she was relieved of her property before he ran away.
Later, on Tuesday morning at approximately 6:40 a.m., Elaine Joseph of Seaview
Farm was seated on a bench on Independence Drive opposite APUA, when she
was approached by a man with a shirt wrapped around his head, who grabbed her
bag and ran off.
The woman reported the matter to the police who visited the scene and carried out
a search of the area. Her description of the assailant fit that of a man who was
found hiding in the abandoned car park nearby.
Shane Grant was taken into police custody and later charged with committing both
crimes.
