A contingent of security officials comprising the police, the defense force, and
prison guards carried out a surprise raid of His Majesty’s Prison in the wee hours
of Saturday morning.
Prison sources said the raid happened at approximately 3:30 am on Saturday when
the prison population was roused from sleep, as the security personnel conducted a
thorough search of the cells.
The raid uncovered marijuana, cigarettes, cell phones, and what appears to be
cocaine, during the operation. While no serious weapons were unearthed, the
sources say there were several make-shift weapons believed to have been made
within the prison walls by inmates.
When asked how these items were able to make it into the prison, the sources
suggested that many items are simply thrown over the prison wall while others are
smuggled into the prison using increasingly creative ways.
Currently, the prison population stands at 236 male inmates, just under 10 female
inmates, and more than 30 persons on remand.
