Antigua and Barbuda is joining other nations across the region to observe

Mosquito Week, 2023, from May 21 to 26.

The observance of the week is being coordinated by the Central Board of Health

and is aimed at raising awareness, strengthening initiatives, and mobilizing the

community to take action to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.

“This year, we will be working alongside primary school children across the nation

to conduct house-to-house inspections, as well as mosquito surveillance near their

schools with staff from the vector control unit,” CBH Supervisor Julienne Mannix

stated.

She said, during the exercise, the staff will be pointing out mosquito breeding

habitats and control measures. “The overall aim is for what happens when the

students return to their respective homes; it is expected that they will educate their

parents on what they learned so that they can assist their parents in the monitoring

and elimination of mosquito breeding sites near their homes,” Mannix remarked.

Additionally, the CBH staff will be engaging residents in the various communities

in discussions on the dangers of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. Throughout this

week, the staff will visit primary schools across Antigua and pay a visit to Barbuda

for a similar purpose.

Mosquito Awareness Week is being observed throughout the Americas including

the English, French, Spanish, and Dutch-speaking territories.
