42-year-old accountant Karim Edwards was granted bail after appearing in Traffic Court yesterday on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

Edwards is the driver who was operating a vehicle that struck American University of Antigua (AUA) medical students, 19-year-old Priyanjana Das and 21-year-old Kenneth Matthew, on Friars Hill Road on 23rd October, 2022 as he was travelling north.

Edwards was initially charged with dangerous driving as the medical students were being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre for the major injuries they sustained in the accident.

On 2nd November, however, Matthew died raising the likelihood that Edwards would face a second charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

While police have never commented on the accident, it is believed that Edwards was charged on Tuesday and appeared in Traffic Court yesterday morning.

Bail was set at $100,000 with a cash component of $20,000. The requirements set out in the first bail hearing which includes reporting to the Langfords Police Station three days a week are expected to remain in effect.

The matter was adjourned to 24th February, 2023.

Meantime, Matthew’s father and uncle will depart the island soon to accompany his body home to Qatar for his funeral.

This is now possible as the postmortem examination of his body was conducted on Monday.

His cause of death is listed as multiple trauma.
