Name: Karrie D. Knight

School: Villa Primary School

What grade or subjects do you teach? Math, Language, Science and Social Studies, Grade 3

How many years have you been teaching? Fourteen years

What do you love most about teaching?  The feeling of being NEEDED! I especially love the gleam in a student’s eye when they finally grasp a difficult concept or achieve a milestone as simple as the ability to write their own name legibly. I also see myself as a narrative disrupter, going above and beyond the call of duty to form RELATIONSHIPS with both my students and their families. I believe in HAVING FUN WHILE LEARNING!

How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected your teaching method?   During the COVID-19 pandemic, the school closures certainly made teaching quite challenging, however, once you love what you do you will find creative and innovative ways to reach your students! I prepared worksheets for my students for all subject areas which they all received. I utilised the Google Classroom platform which had its own setbacks as it relates to student access of both the internet and devices. Again I took to the internet to plea for help on behalf of my students and the response was overwhelming. I gave practical projects which saw even the family members of my students getting involved in being a communication worker for a day, kite making and flying and thermometer making and reading, just to name a few. The highlight of teaching remotely was when I introduced my students to the world,  in the first ever Virtual Science Fair, where Facebook users from all over the world voted for my brave boys and girls who ably introduced themselves and their solar system projects.
