Monday 12th August, 2019-The US National facing drug related charges was remanded to prison following a court appearance today.
28 year-old Jaron Philip of Nonsuch Bay stood before Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh in St. John’s Magistrates Court today and was denied bail.
Philip, who has been residing in Antigua and Barbuda only for a short time, has been charged with possession of 18.5 pounds of cannabis.
He also faces charges of importation, possession with intent to transfer, being concerned with the supply of the drugs, and drug trafficking. Philip was taken into custody after the Police and Customs officials intercepted a barrel containing the marijuana at the Port last week. He was reportedly in the process of clearing the barrel last Thursday, August 8, when sniffer dogs attached to the Police K-9 Unit alerted officials to the presence of the illegal drugs.
His committal proceedings are set for October.
While he was denied bail in the Magistrate’s Court, Jaron Philip can petition the High Court to grant him bail.
The High Court will handle his case when it goes to trial.
