Thursday 6th June, 2019-Government has assured plans for a new public cemetery is being treated with urgency.
The Cabinet discussed the pace at which the Public Cemetery is filling and advised that plans to inaugurate the new cemetery on Factory Road (Sir Sydney Walling Highway) could commence by placing EC$1 million dollars in a special account to start the construction of the infrastructure required.
Information Minister Melford Nicholas says work can begin within months.
The St. John’s Public Cemetery has ran out of space and was closed at one point. However, without an alternative and community cemeteries also filling up, the burial ground was re-opened.
The two funeral homes have also indicated their willingness to invest in establishing crematoriums, in order to meet the growing demand for this particular burial system.
