Thursday 10th May, 2018-The Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers is standing by its decision not to join the Trade Union Congress during Labour Day celebrations on Monday.

The TUC joined with the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union at its Newgate Street headquarters on Monday for a rally, one in which the Teachers’ Union wanted no part of.

Speaking at a delegates’ conference on Thursday morning, President Ashworth Azille said the A&BUT has been associated with the TUC since its inception, but he was quick to add that it does not mean they will allow the teacher’s union to be influenced by politics and risk tarnishing its reputation.

The A&BUT president pledged his union’s continued support of all unions within the country, including the Trade Union Congress. But Ashworth Azille issued a veiled warning that if the umbrella body cannot respect the wishes of its members, then there may be a parting of ways.
